Proven Process to Remove Pet Urine from Carpets (Part 2)

Here’s the sure-fire guide by pet size for using Un-Duz-It Unleashed® pet stain and odor eliminator:

Small animal urine contamination

Urine deposited by small animals usually only requires a topical treatment because the urine has not penetrated the padding.

Process:
1. Dilute Un-Duz-It Unleashed 50-50 - 1 part water to 1 part of Unleashed.
2. Apply diluted Unleashed to all urine deposits but do not saturate the carpet fibers. (Saturation isn’t required as the urine did not penetrate the padding.)
3. Allow 60 minutes (1 hour) of dwell time. This is a MUST!
4. Clean the carpets using hot water extraction to remove the components of the urine that have been made water soluble.

Large animal urine contamination

Larger animals deposit a higher volume of urine than small animals do, so the contamination is usually 3 layers deep – carpet, padding and subfloor – which requires you to recreate the degree of penetration. Watch this video to see the process below in action!

Tools needed for deep contamination:
1. Shop vac or portable carpet extraction unit – don’t use a small home-style carpet extractor as the vacuum is not strong enough.
2. Watering can to apply the Unleashed.
3. Sub-surface extraction tool – required to produce sufficient vacuum power to draw out deep urine contamination from carpet, padding and subfloor.
4. High velocity floor dryer like the Dri-Eaz Dri-Pod to quick-dry the treated areas

Process:
1. Apply Un-Duz-It Unleashed undiluted onto urine affected areas, saturating carpet and padding. (The urine deposit is at least 3 times the size of visual stains.)
2. Allow 60 minutes (1 hour) of dwell time. This is critical to completely breakdown the odor-causing molecules deposited with the urine.
3. Attach the sub-surface tool to the shop vac or portable extractor, set the tool on top of the treated carpets and turn on vacuum. While the vacuum is extracting the area, slowly pour a bucket of water on the top of the tool, allowing it to run over the sides and down into the carpet and padding. Continue flushing until the water appears clear through the tool. Next move the tool around the stained area to continue removing water until you see very little water is coming through the sub-surface tool head, leaving the area as dry as possible.
4. Clean the affected carpet area using a hot water extraction process.
5. Place Dri-Pods on the area to dry the carpets completely; usually 24 hours will be enough to dry the carpets.

If you follow this process, it will usually remove the urine odor (ammonia smell) as well as the yellow urine stains deposited in the fibers.

Important Notes

Some older urine deposits that have not been treated will appear yellow. While that might seem to be the urochrome pigment, it actually indicates loss of fiber color due to ammonia gasses attacking the carpet dye. Unfortunately, this situation is not correctable and all the more reason for prompt treatment of pet accidents!

While we can eliminate the urine odor enough for our human olfactory systems (our sense of smell), our pets can still smell it. Animals’ olfactory systems are much more acute that humans. Also, the yellow green glow that we see only under UV light conditions, our pets can see without the aid of a UV light. These two factors explain why our beloved pets seem to reoffend the same areas time after time.

Fast and thorough action is critical, so having Un-Duz-It Unleashed on hand is key!
